Newer vehicle has to be put off...
...until I'm 18. In two years.
And I have to save for it myself, plus $1,000 from my grandma.
I'm thinking positive though. That just means I could save up enough to actually get a good car. Around $6,000 I'm hoping. And newer, better cars will be even cheaper!
What do we think Saturn Astra/Aura prices will be at in two years? Around $6k?
Maybe the van will die and we'll have to get me a new car.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:09 |

Would it do any good if I suggested some other options? I promise, nothing insane to work on.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:10 |

Or you could make the van die? Haha, The Astra is a good idea. But once again, by force you will be doing Opel badging if that's what you'll be getting.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:11 |

Hey man, I'm 26 and my most expensive vehicle was only half that. $6K can probably get you something pretty nice.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:11 |
|
If you save up until you are 20 you will have even more money!!!
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:13 |
|
Surely!
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:13 |
|
If you saved up would your parents allow you to buy a car sooner?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:13 |

I actually like the styling of the Astra/Aura. But then, I'm odd, I always have had a soft spot for Saturn since I went car shopping with my mother as a kid in the early 90s , and the Saturn dealer had an entire Saturn car part obstacle course set up where the whole point was to bounce up and down on a door panels and stuff "proving" how resistant the Saturn line up was to dings or even larger dents.
In the end my mother bought a Mazda 323, and she loved the heck out of that little car:
I'd still rock it.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:13 |
|
YOU DON'T KNOW HOW HARD I TRY TO KILL IT.
Opel badging would be happening for sure.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:15 |
|
Exactly! Better than the $2k budget my parents originally had planned.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:15 |
|
Who knows that the market will do by that time? Remember, *any* car is the best first car :)
I do like the Astra, though. But keep in mind that the huge panoramic sunroof was only available on the 4-door.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:16 |

$6k sounds like plenty. And it will get me out of that white bread box that weighs 4800 pounds and has 200 horsepower.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:17 |
|
I'm sure they would, but my grandma won't give me that $1,000 until I'm 18.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:18 |
|
You must become the next Astraman!!
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:18 |
|
Actually, Auras around $6k might be closer than you think. There's a couple on eBay selling for under $7k right now, including one for $4k that has a dent and needs a little work under the hood.
Astras aren't too far off, either.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:19 |

Blow it up? Find somebody kind enough to steal it for you? Hydrolock it somehow?
Something is bound to go wrong sooner or later. Exactly how far are they willing to go to keep you on the road with it? Like how much would they spend to keep it alive?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:19 |

That part obstacle course sounds awesome. I wanna jump on doors!
I'm partial to Saturn mostly because my mom's had two of them, and the 2008 Vue she currently owns is a great car.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:20 |
|
I know! I love the 2-doors styling, but that panoramic roof is really awesome.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:21 |

TIL there are actually people in this world who aspire to own used Saturns.
You're joking, right?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:21 |
|
I'd love to be!
I'd just have to install an Aux jack somewhere.
And make sure it's a 5-speed.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:21 |
|
Well that's awesome to know. So they'll be even cheaper.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:25 |
|
They just spend $500 fixing the brakes not too long ago. Anything more than that and they might say fuck it.

Would it be any way possible to get a job...you already have the van so you at least can drive to work
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:26 |
|
Nope, sure aren't. They're great cars.
My mom has a 2008 Vue and I love it.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:26 |
|
My only gripe with the car.... There are some pricey kits online and some are very specific to the car but if you get the right one you're all set! Also some FM transmitters too.
Keep your head up and make it happen! :)

Yeah, I think it was a great marketing concept. It involved the children in the purchasing process in a way that screams FUN for the kid and SAFETY and VALUE for the parents. Genius, really. I have no idea if it was a national marketing plan or just the dealership, but IT WUR SMURT.
Honestly, I am not much of a US domestic car fan. But this was my high school car:
I hated it, and it was awful. It got totalled when a woman set up a fraudulent accident. She backed up in the middle of traffic and I rear ended her. She then claimed she wasn't moving. My lawyer found out she had several outstanding suits against other drivers and against stores for various injuries (like a slip on a spill at a local Wal-Mart). We settled with her, and I got this instead:
I was much happier.

I've been trying to get a job with no luck, I have a friend who's work is hiring. As much as I don't like working with friends, it'd be money.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:27 |

How hard have you been trying to kill it? Then I possibly can hook you up with some suggestions ;)
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:28 |

I can't believe this car didn't ship with an Aux jack, that's just so weird.
I'm definitely making it happen.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:28 |

First, you can get Auras/Astras that cheap already.
Secondly, I would recommend looking at a Honda Accord V6, VW Golf, Buick Regal Supercharged, Cadillac Seville STS, Acura 3.2TL, Oldsmobile Aurora gen 1, Chrysler 300M, Nissan Maxima, Mazda3, Mazda6, Ford 500, Ford Fusion, Volvo S60, Volvo S40, Volvo V70, Mazda Millenia, Pontiac Boneville, Chrysler Concorde, Saab 9-3, Saab 9-5, BMW 3-Series, VW Passat, Subaru Impreza, Subaru Outback, Subaru Legacy, and Nissan Altima before you buy the first Saturn you see. You may still end up liking the Saturn best, but in the midsize sedan/hatchback segment, there's lots of choice.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:29 |

Ehh, an Escort, I'm sorry you had to live with that.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:31 |

Let's just say the transmission has been shifted into reverse while going forward a couple times. It's been airborne. Powerslided.
I've been trying HARD.

Great compared to what? Walking or taking the bus?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:32 |

It was great suffering, but I survived (no, seriously, it was just an awful, awful car).
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:32 |

If I were you I would apply, money is money...keep your eye on the prize
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:35 |

Haha, That's perfect!
I'd just be careful about that thing tipping, which pretty much rules out nearly everything in my "Automotive Torture Volume 3: American Vans" handbook. Uhm, Redline it for hours?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:35 |
|
I guess I should've mentioned lower miles. Like less than 100k.
I was looking at the Fusion, 9-3/9-5, and 3-series. I really like how the Fusion looks, how quirky the 9-3/9-5 is, and how well the 3-series drives.
I dunno man, I have a lot to choose from.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:37 |
|
I like them. They're cheap to buy. Easy to maintain. And if they all drive like my mom's Vue, they're nice to drive.
I'm sorry not all of us want Miatas?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:37 |
|
I will warn you, I went an looked at a series II Disco with about 80k miles on it, and when I asked that salesman about reliability and repair costs, he said, "Well, it's not great, but at least it's not a Saab." So yeah, I love them too, but that may be the opposite of your van in terms of longevity.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:37 |
|
oh trust me, I did.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:40 |

Turn?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:41 |
|
It actually takes corners surprisingly well. Until you turn the wheels too far and it just goes straight.
I think it has a limiter in park and neutral. I'm not sure though, because it doesn't have a tachometer.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:41 |
|
Go around a corner in a vigorous fashion.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:41 |

Nope. Saabs ruled out now. I need reliability dammit.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:42 |

Silly me, You only option left is to set it on fire and push it into a river.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:42 |

![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:42 |

Audi?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:42 |

you should work and earn every penny to buy your car. You'll appreciate it more and your parents won't be able to take it away from you if you do dumb shit. I've had 10 cars so far and some of theme were pretty nice too and my parents contributed a grand total of $0.00 so far. I never even been on my parents insurance plan.
This is only my opinion but I don't want to owe anyone anything. Everything I have ever done I have done by myself. To me it's the best way to do it.
other than grandma's money of course to that money is always welcome
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:44 |

If I can find one at CarMax for $6k including the warranty, then yes.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:44 |

is it a 2.8L? if so just over rev it for a few minutes and it will spin the bearings and presto no more safari. if it's a 4.3L you are screwed those almost can't be killed

4.3 High Output. IT CAN'T BE KILLED.

your still in high school right? get any job that you can. I'm sure a fast food joint would hire you. you would be surprised how quick you can save on minimum wage when you are still living at home with your folks.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:48 |

I can understand not wanting a Miata.
I cannot understand wanting a Saturn.

![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:55 |

The cheapest car on all of Carmax is an Aveo w/ 94k miles, and that's $7000
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:56 |
|
...they want $7k for an Aveo?
Then I guess no Audi.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 21:58 |
|
I guess not. Or maybe.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:00 |

Hooolllyyy shit. Dat blue interior. Dem low miles. DAT...
...FWD!?!?!?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:00 |

Completely serious answer, have you thought about a mid-2000's Corolla XRS? They come with the 2ZZ-GE motor with Yamaha heads and an 8k redline. That is basically the same engine as in the Elise. And manual is available.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:01 |
|
Quattro ain't cheap. Throw on some snows and you'll be okay.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:02 |
|
Oh hey, those are the Corollas I actually kinda like.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:02 |

True.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:04 |
|
Cheap, reliable, revvy, and efficient.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:06 |
|
But I think you can get Civic Sis in my currently hypothetical range... That slightly shoots the Corolla down, but still on the list.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:35 |
|
Yeah that's true, but since Civic's are rice burner theft kings, what is the insurance like?
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:39 |
|
Yeah, I know how you feel. When my sister got a new car I have had to wait 2 years to get my VW Cabrio. And a new car? Man, it seems like a distant future. Oh, and the next new car is for my mother... Hang there, and I think the Astra is an excellent choice. Opel badging as soon as possible
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:39 |
|
I have no idea, but that would be very important. It's probably high.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:41 |
|
Opel badging is a must.
I'm MazdaSpeed3s right now. The first generations are at about $10k right now, $4k in depreciation in 2 years is a bit optimistic, but you never know. Maybe just a normal 3.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:44 |
|
I have no clue, but because of their reputable owners, I would suspect it is high.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:44 |
|
Fuckin' ricers.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:54 |

How do yo feel about getting a car from other brands that isn't the brand you support. I know that I must respect every good car no matter the manufacturer, but I sometimes think:
Hmmmmm, I think it would be cool to have a Fiat Abarth 500. Oh man, but there is the VW Polo GTI, GLI, and all the Seats. It would be wrong to buy its competitor.
I think I am exaggerating, but I don't believe I'm the only one who does this.
Also, Zoom-Zoom is good!
![]() 07/09/2014 at 22:56 |

I like all brands pretty much. I'd buy any brand really. I just have a preference for American companies.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 23:04 |

I see. Heres a picture of gratitude of Bob Lutz kissing an Astra

No... Land Rovers are much worse than Saabs. Saabs aren't too bad. Where something like an old Civic would cost me $400-$500/month (all expenses including insurance and gasoline), a Saab will cost between 100-200/month more. Some of that is because the maintenance is a little more expensive (mobile 1 full synthetic is a must), parts are more expensive and the need for service is a bit more frequent, but not dreadful.
I know this because I've owned both.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 23:11 |

VW Golfs
VW Jettas
Toyota Celicas
Just to name a few.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 23:12 |

Or a Matrix XRS or the Pontiac Vibe GT.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 23:12 |

That so sounds like something Saturn would hold a contest for.
![]() 07/09/2014 at 23:14 |

Just the first generations of those. The second generation looks better IMO, but doesn't have the 2ZZ. They're not fun to daily drive either.

Aww that sucks! I'm sorry man... Well, you'll have your tire-shredding V6 aurora soon!
(seriously though. they're fast as all hell! total sleeper! my stepdad and I rented one for a week-long trip (well the then-same Malibu) and oh lord is it fast car!)

Hehe, jk. I really do like the idea of an Astra, I think the Vue would like it too.
